The painting depicts endless fields of lavender in the picturesque area of Valensole in Provence.  The main color of the painting is a breathtaking violet, which dominates the vastness of the lavender fields.  Majestic mountains rise on the horizon, their contours blurring in the distance. They form a tranquil backdrop for the foreground of the painting.
The sky above this scene is streaked with dark storm clouds, painted in various shades of gray and blue. 
The landscape is moistened by a gentle shower of rain that can be seen in the distance. 
The scent of lavender, rosemary, fresh hay and other herbs literally rises from the picture and mingles with the vivid depiction of nature. The scenery radiates an atmosphere of calm and freshness, while at the same time the energy of the approaching thunderstorm is palpable.
